PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal element having a high displaying contrast and a memory property, and a smectic liquid crystal composition useful for producing the liquid crystal element. SOLUTION: This smectic liquid crystal-based composition is provided by containing at least 1 kind of dichromatic pigment and a nematic liquid crystal capable of being driven by 2 frequencies and smectic liquid crystal, and changing the anisotropic permittivity of the liquid crystal composition from positive to negative by increasing the frequency of an impressed electric voltage. Also, the liquid crystal element is provided by having a pair of electrodes at least one of which is a transparent electrode and a liquid crystal layer between the pair of the electrodes, and the liquid crystal layer is the liquid crystal element containing the smectic liquid crystal-based composition.
