PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform character inputting that is easy to operate and is easily learned, reduces fatigue feeling and is performed at high speed in a small portable terminal. SOLUTION: In this character inputting method of a small portable terminal for setting a group of characters different from one another in respective keys and inputting characters by the key depression of the keys, a character to be inputted is selected by a combination of character codes obtained by continuously depressing, within a prescribed period, a first key to be depressed and at least one key adjacent horizontally, diagonally and vertically to the first key.
