A pump for pumping solids suspended in a carrier fluid has an upright pump chamber (10) with a side aperture (12, 14) into which is positioned an operating membrane. A suction valve (16) is fitted to the top of the pump housing and a pressure valve (18) is fitted to the bottom. This ensures that any solids collected at the bottom of the pump chamber are dispersed by the turbulent inflow when the pressure valve opens during the pressure phase of the membrane pump. The suction and pressure valves are fitted with tapering valve elements operating in tapering valve seats.
