A railway locomotive has a direct drive to a set of wheels. The direct drive has a stator (2) and a rotor (5) that engages directly with the wheel shaft (11). The mechanical linkage between the rotor and the shaft consists of two components (10, 20). The components effect an asymmetric linkage to the shaft, thereby reducing the torsion moments in the shaft.
