<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of transmitting an audio signal improved in compression rate by predicting and coding the audio signal. <P>SOLUTION: An addition circuit 1a calculates a sum signal (L+R) of stereo two channel signals L and R, and a subtraction circuit 1b calculates a difference signal (L-R). This time and prior time differencesΔ(L+R) andΔ(L-R) are calculated by difference calculation circuits 11D1 and 11D2. A plurality of prediction values ofΔ(L+R) andΔ(L-R) are calculated by prediction coding circuits (15D1, 15D2, 16D1 and 16D2). Each prediction residual difference between the plurality of the prediction values and the differencesΔ(L+R) andΔ(L-R) is calculated.
