PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing method to keep membrane performance high by efficiently washing and removing manganese dioxide or iron oxide attached to the membrane surface in a membrane separation means for membrane separation by injecting an oxidizer to manganese- and/or iron-containing water. SOLUTION: The washing method is provided for washing a primary side of the membrane separation means by bisulfite solution periodically or at a point of time when the separation performance lowers below a given value. Any kind of bisulfite solution can dissolve and efficiently remove manganese dioxide or iron oxide on the membrane surface by its strong reducing capacity. By washing the primary side with an acid after washing with bisulfite solution, the reducing property of bisulfite remaining on the membrane can be removed. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
