PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect that containers may be brought into contact with one another in a coating apparatus. SOLUTION: The coating apparatus 100 comprises a conveyer 10 for conveying containers 1, ring-like belts 20 and 30 disposed in a manner that they can be brought into contact with side faces of the containers 1 on the conveyer 10 and coat the side faces of the containers 1 with a coating liquid while rotating the containers 1, a detection part 60 (S1, S2, and 62) for generating a detection signal DET when the intervals of the containers 1 on the conveyer 10 are detected to be narrower than a prescribed value, and a control part 70 for executing error treatment corresponding to the generation of the detection signal DET by the detection part 60.
