<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To restrain unevenness of brightness caused by a strut while surely holding an optical structure such as a dispersion plate. <P>SOLUTION: On a light source of the backlight device, a light transmitting material is used at least at a part contacting a top end part of the strut 30 for keeping a space between a dispersion plate 141 into which light from a light source, for example, that from a light emitting diode is incident, and the light emitting diode constant. With this, light L0 irradiated on the strut 30 is taken in, and the light L0 taken in is guided upward into the inside of the strut, and light Lr0 is irradiated from the part in contact with the dispersion plate 141 at the tip end part.
