PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a multistage automatic transmission having a plurality of clutches function as a backup brake. SOLUTION: When the judgment that an interlock brake control is to be started in the steps S1 to S6, the following control is executed in the next steps S7 to S13. The standby gear engaged with the other input shaft is detected. The gradient of a characteristic function for determining the clutch position for slipping connection is determined on the basis of both the presently selected gear detected and the standby gear detected as above. The necessary clutch position Ch in the other clutch not yet completely connected is determined on the basis of the deficient deceleration differenceΔBe calculated in the step S5 with reference to the gradient. Besides, the target clutch position Ct in the other clutch not yet completely connected is calculated. In order to realize the target clutch position calculated, a clutch position command Ct is outputted to a clutch actuator 47 or 48 of the other clutch not yet completely connected to execute the slipping connection.
