PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video signal recording/reproducing apparatus, equipped with functions which reproduce an arbitrary partial recorded, while it is in a recording state. SOLUTION: The apparatus digitizes a video signal, obtained from a television signal via an antenna 1 and a tuner 2, compresses it with a picture compression means to compress an amount of information per unit time, for example, a MPEG1 encoder 4, and writes the output in a hard disk drive unit 8 via a magnetic head. It reads a compression video signal recorded previously from the hard disk drive unit 8 via the identical magnetic head, provides a recovering means for recovering a read compression video signal to an original video signal, for example, a MPEG1 decoder 12, and a television monitor 13 which displays the video image, and reads the video signal recorded previously, at the same time that it writes a video signal to the hard disk 8.
