PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of maintaining the consistent paper feed performance by a pickup roller and performing the consistent paper feed by increasing the contact pressure between the pickup roller and a paper sheet. SOLUTION: A lift plate 3 with paper sheets stacked thereon is provided on an inner bottom face of a paper sheet storage unit 2 of a paper feeder 1. A pickup roller 11 is pressed against the highest sheet of a paper sheet bundle to feed the paper sheet P downwardly. A paper feed roller 12 receives the paper sheet and discharges it outside the paper feeder 1. The pickup roller 11 is rotatably supported by a supporting member 14, and rotatable within the vertical plane with a shaft part 12a of the paper feed roller 12 as a center, and the moment M1 around the axis of the paper feed roller 12 can be obtained. When the lift plate 3 is lifted, the upward movement of the pickup roller 11 from the predetermined position is prevented by a stopper 15 provided on a ceiling part at a place of the pickup roller 11, and a suitable contact pressure can be obtained between the pickup roller 11 and the paper sheet P.
