PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a capping device which prevents the generation of mist when the flushing operation is carried out, and can also precisely determine a relative positional relationship with a cap part without being decelerated when a carriage with a recording head moves to a position opposed to the cap part. SOLUTION: The capping device comprises a cap unit 202 which can be moved by acting parts (210, 211 and 213) to a first position separated from the recording head 106, and to a second position where the cap unit connects with the recording head to seal an ink orifice array (106a). The cap unit comprises a slider part 205 where a claw part 214 that can connect with the recording head is formed, and the cap part 204 which seals the ink orifice array. A distance of a stroke of the cap part is smaller than a distance of a stroke of the slider part in the movement between the first position and the second position.
