PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system for the periphery of a vehicle capable of extracting the contour of an obstacle without being affected by the shadows of the obstacle caused by lighting a light unit of the vehicle even when the surrounding is dark at night or the like. SOLUTION: The monitoring system for the periphery of a vehicle for providing information on the obstacle present around the vehicle to an occupant by means of a notice unit, includes a photographing apparatus for photographing a scene around the vehicle, and a lighting device 4 for projecting lighting light with a prescribed pattern including a design within the photographing range of the photographing apparatus in order to extract the contour of the obstacle under a state that the periphery of the vehicle is darker than that at a daytime.
