PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a titanium oxide precursor giving titanium oxide exhibiting high photocatalytic activity, and to provide a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: The titanium oxide precursor is composed of an oxygen-containing titanium compound, and, from the small particle diameter side of a cumulative particle size distribution measured by a laser diffraction type particle size distribution measuring apparatus, provided that the particle diameter of 10 vol.% is defined as D10, the particle diameter of 50 vol.% is defined as D50, and the particle diameter of 90 vol.% is defined as D90, the value obtained by (D90-D10)÷D50 is≤1. Regarding the method for producing a titanium oxide precursor, a hydrogen peroxide solution is added to a water-soluble titanium compound, so as to make a mixture, the mixture and a base are added at a feeding rate in which the feeding time of the whole content reaches≥2 hr, so as to perform hydrolysis, the hydrolysate obtained by the hydrolysis is retrieved by a solid-liquid separation means to obtain a cake, and, in the drying of the obtained cake, till at least 20 wt.% of moisture contained in the cake is removed, it is held at ordinary temperature, and is dried.
