The device has a size sensor with a light emitting diode (21) irradiating light in a coin flow channel, and a scanner (22) receiving the light that is reflected by the channel or a coin (10) that moves through the channel. The light is converted into electrical signals that are in turn converted into a digital data by an analog/digital converter. A selection signal is generated when the data falls below a certain correlation level, where the diode and the scanner are attached to the channel, so that the light is reflected from a flat side of the coin.
