A paper mill smoothes paper, carton or another fibrous web (1) as it passes through an elongated calender gap formed by a heated lower drum (3) and an upper press drum (2) with a flexible mantle (7) incorporating a press shoe (6) with a concave interface. After termination of the web feed the flexible mantle is cooled by a fluid. The first calender gap is followed by a second prior art heated calender (4, 5) with a press shoe mounted in the lower drum. The heated second calender is cooled by fluid after termination of the web feed.
