PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an adaptive array radio communication apparatus in which operation quantity is small, a converging speed is high and an antenna element suited to transmission/reception can be suitably selected, and a method for the apparatus. SOLUTION: The directivity of an array antenna element is controlled on the basis of array weight, an antenna element selection part 23 is controlled so as to intermittently determine an antenna element and an antenna element determination period is adjusted on the basis of the information of the antenna element determined by a control part 26.
