PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide means to simply and accurately detect the front end and the rear end of a recording paper fed to an image recording device. SOLUTION: The image forming device has a scanning carriage 38 equipped with a medium sensor 50 in the upstream side of the transfer direction of a recording head 39 and at one end of a scanning direction and moving forward and backward in a prescribed direction together with the recording head 39, and records an image on the recording paper P by the recording head 39 by making the scanning carriage 38 scan in a prescribed direction, makes the scanning carriage 38 wait in a waiting position where the recording head 39 gets out of the range of the recording paper P and the medium sensor 50 gets into the range of the recording paper P, transfers the recording paper P at a prescribed line feed pitch and detects the front end and the rear end of the recording paper P by the medium sensor 50 during the transfer.
