The system to determine the temperature of a gas in a gas container (R), e.g. at gas turbine assemblies and aircraft engines, has a laser diode (S) to transmit light rays (L) at a bi-directional on/off coupling (F) integrated into the container wall. A detector (E) receives the reflected beams to determine the gas temperature. The laser diode and detector are outside the gas container.
