PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a holography optical system which has high practicality although the holography optical system has a wide view angle and large area, and an image display device. SOLUTION: The holography optical system has a plurality of hologram elements (1A) for generating desired diffracted light, and the respective hologram elements (1A) or reduced projection images of the respective hologram elements are dotted on a designated plane to display a three-dimensional image with the whole of diffracted light generated on the designated plane. Fine elements (P) are arranged at small intervals as the respective hologram elements (1A) to increase a diffraction spread angleθof each diffracted beam, thereby making the view angle of the three-dimensional image large. Further, the plurality of hologram elements (1A) are discretely arrayed, so the total number of fine elements (P) can be made small even when the size of the arrangement surface of the hologram elements is made large.
