PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve ignitability by a spark plug when injecting fuel during an expansion stroke in a cylinder injection internal combustion engine in which an injector is arranged as opposed to a crown surface. SOLUTION: Spray speed in a later stage of the injection period is reduced when injecting fuel during an expansion stroke. Ignition is executed before collision against a piston with respect to the spray injected in the later stage. As one of methods for reducing the spray speed, the speed in the later stage is substantially reduced through deceleration over the whole of the injection period by reducing fuel pressure.
