Disclosed is a fuel cell system capable of producing a higher power output. Specifically disclosed is an electrode for fuel cells comprising a gas-permeable base and an anode catalyst layer (92a) or a cathode catalyst layer (93a) formed on one surface of the base and loaded with a catalyst. The anode catalyst layer (92a) and the cathode catalyst layer (93a) contain a carbon aerogel which is obtained by pulverizing an organic wet gelled product for forming gel fine particles, then performing a solvent exchange by bringing the thus-formed gel fine particles into contact with a water-soluble organic solvent and subjecting the resulting gel fine particles to supercritical drying for obtaining a gel dried powder, and finally thermally decomposing the gel dried powder.
