The strap retractor (1,2) for tensioning straps has a facility whereby different strap widths can be selectively accommodated by threading on the open end of the strap or by a hook on the inside. The tensioning strap can be rolled up by means of a hand crank (7), by spring tension, or by means of an electric drive. A specially formed hub enables the holding of both strap ends. The strap can be pulled out after removal of the crank. The strap retractor is mounted on the side of a vehicle.
