Method for applying aqueous solutions with different concentrations of active material to live cells or isolated membrane patches of cells comprises feeding at least two solutions of different concentration to a position near that where application is to be carried out and mixing them in a ratio which gives a final solution of the desired concentration. An independent claim is included for apparatus for carrying out the method which comprises precision syringes (1, 2) containing the starting solutions (3, 4). These are connected by steel pipes (5, 6) to a microscopically small mixing chamber (8) near the application site (7) and pumps (13, 14) are connected upstream from the syringes which can be controlled to give a precise flow speed for the solutions.
