PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to designate a comparatively appropriate dynamic range. SOLUTION: A display screen 90 of a digital still camera displays a dynamic initial setting menu image 70. The menu image 70 indicates a "mobile" area 71, a "printer" area 72, and a "CRT" area 73. Numerals indicating dynamic ranges suitable for recording modes specified by the respective areas are displayed to the right of the areas 71 to 73. A desired dynamic range can be designated among the dynamic ranges expressed by the displayed numerals. Composite image data are produced so as to have the designated dynamic range. Since numerals of dynamic ranges unsuitable for the recording modes are not displayed and the user cannot designate the dynamic ranges unsuitable for the recording modes, the composite data with a comparatively proper dynamic range can be obtained.
