PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector having excellent animation display characteristic and also uniform in-plane display characteristic. SOLUTION: The projector 1000 is equipped with: liquid crystal devices 400R, 400G and 400B; a projection optical system 600; a lighting system 100 which has a light source device 110, a first lens array 120 having a plurality of first small lenses 122, a second lens array 130 and a superposing lens 150, and whose first small lens has plane shape compressed in a y-axis direction in order to emit illumination luminous flux having cross-sectional shape compressed in the y-axis direction so that the image forming area of the liquid crystal device may be wholly illuminated in an x-axis direction and it may be partially illuminated in the y-axis direction; and a rotary prism 770 scanning along in the y-axis direction on the image forming area of the liquid crystal device with the illumination luminous flux from the lighting system.
