<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the thickness of a shutter that protects a photoreceptor drum and, moreover, to prevent its deformation. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes: a drum unit having the photoreceptor drum on which an electrostatic latent image is formed; a developing unit disposed opposite to the photoreceptor drum and used to develop the electrostatic latent image; and a protective cover 32 for protecting the surface of the photoreceptor drum by being brought to an intercepting position when at least the drum unit or developing unit is detached from the main body of the main body of an image forming apparatus. When the developing unit and image carrier unit are attached to the main body of the image forming apparatus, the protective cover is brought to a retracting position where the developing unit and the image carrier are disposed opposite to each other.
