PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct a defect inspection of a magnetic disk by write/read test without being influenced by random errors. SOLUTION: A data block 57 of a data sector is logically divided into a plurality of determination areas 1-14. When an ECC error occurs in reproducing test data, an area is determined where the bit error has occurred. If a bit error occurs in the same determination area when the test data is reproduced and a plurality of ECC errors occur, it is recognized as a defective sector. When a bit error occurs in a different determination area, it is decided an ECC errors by random causes, and does not determine that it is a defective sector. Consequently, a possibility of erroneously recognizing a sector having no defect in a medium as a defective sector can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
