The tensioner (1) for the drive chain or -belt of a combustion engine is equipped with a lever (6) attached to a return pulley (7) with its upper end and with a lower, axially sliding segment (5) with an irregular pitch acting on a pin (10) horizontally protruding from a base (11). A helical spring (3) is positioned between a housing (2) and the lower surface (9) of the sliding segment (5). When the pulley (7) is moved the sliding segment (5) is also rotated, but is mechanically de-coupled from the motion of the pulley (7).
