A spring-based driving mechanism for an anastomotic ring applier is provided to deploy an anastomotic ring, without requiring a large actuating force to be transmitted from a proximal portion of ring to a distal portion thereof. A surgical instrument includes a handle(18), a ring deployment mechanism receiving and deploying an anastomotic ring, an elongate shaft connecting the handle with the ring deployment mechanism, and a elastic member communicating with the ring deployment mechanism. The elastic member is moveable from a first position to a second position. The elastic member moves from the first position to the second position to actuate the ring deployment mechanism. The elastic member is a spring. The elastic member is compressed from the first position to the second position.
