PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stirling engine and a stirling cooling storage superior in workability and having a pressure adjusting mechanism free from excessive lowering of operating efficiency of the engine. SOLUTION: A piston 14 has a communication passage for communicating a working space and a back pressure space. The communication passage includes an internal space 140 formed inside of the piston 14, an opening portion 141 reaching the internal space 140 from an end face at a back pressure space side, of the piston 14, and an opening portion 142 reaching the internal space 140 from an end face at a compression space side of the piston 14. A check valve 144 is mounted on the opening portion 141 for inhibiting the flow from the compression space to the back pressure space while permitting the flow from the back pressure space to the compression space.
