PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter 1 reducing a retreating force acting on a pinion 6 meshed with a ring gear 23 by making a tilt angle of the pinion 6 small. SOLUTION: The meshing of the pinion 6 with the ring gear 23 at a tilt angleθgenerates the retreating force F acting in a direction removing the pinion 6 from the ring gear 23. When the retreating force F becomes larger than a reaction force Sp of a pinion spring 20, the pinion 6 is retreated from the ring gear 23 and may cause the removal of the pinion 6 from the ring gear 23 in the worst case. The tilt angleθof the pinion is set so that the retreating force F acting on the pinion becomes smaller than the reaction force Sp of the pinion spring 20. Therefore, the retreating of the pinion 6 from the ring gear 23 is suppressed and the flapping of the pinion 6 is reduced, so that noise is reduced and the abrasion of the pinion 6 and the ring gear 23 is suppressed.
