PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for machining fine recessed portions, the method which stably forms fine recessed portions even on the surface of a workpiece hardened by a heat treatment without damaging a tool, and further to provide a sliding component having the fine recessed portions formed by the method described above. SOLUTION: A white layer and a tempered layer are formed in the surface portion of the hardened workpiece by grinding the workpiece hardened by the heat treatment. In the final stage of the grinding operation, the white layer portion is removed by a post processing, such as sparking-out, super-finishing, micro-finishing, and then the fine recessed portions are formed in the soft tempered layer.
