<p>Hardened cutter members (22a, 22b) commonly called cutters (22) used in saw chains (20) to act as cutter links (22, 22a, 22b). The hardened cutters (22a, 22b) have hard insets (70) applied and connected to the cutting face (66) of the cutter (22). The insets (70) are made of a hard, tough material, such as a suitable carbide. Also shown are saw chains (20a) having the hardened cutter links (22a, 22b) with the hard insets (70). The preferred insets (70) include a rear portion (71) having a semi-cylindrical attachment surface (77). The attachment surface (77) is configured for attachment to a filed or ground cutting tooth face (64) of a conventional saw chain cutter (22). A front portion (35) of the inset (70) has a cutting face (90) which is provided with beveled cutting face corners (104) and preferably chamfered edges (120) extending rearwardly from the inset cutting face (90). Methods of producing the cutters (22a, 22b) with insets (70) and for producing saw chains (20a) with the hardened cutters (22a, 22b) are also described.</p> |
