A bet is recorded by punching a card and entering the card at a reading station 10. The reading stations are connected in groups to hubs 12 which are effectively buffer stores. Bets recorded at stations connected to a hub are punched on to paper tape and are read into a buffer store having a capacity of five bets. The buffers are cyclically scanned and their contents transferred to a magnetic drum comprising bet storage 14. Odds are continuously calculated in known manner and the results displayed on a board 22. Betting on a particular race is stopped by actuation of manual controls 24 which prevent the depression of card punching keys. At the conclusion of a race the manual controls are operated to cause the winner and dividends to be entered from the computer into the store 26, which may be part of the magnetic drum. To claim winnings the punched card is presented at a cashier station 17 where it is identified by the hub which transmitted the bet and the race for which it is valid. This identification is made by a card reader which calls for all bets made on the race to be read from the drum 14 to the cashier station. The bets are compared automatically with the remaining information on the card and when the bet corresponding to the card is found information in store 26 is made available at the cashier station which for this purpose is multiplexed with the other stations 17. At the same time the card is transferred to a receptacle and a mark is made on the drum against the bet to indicate that payout has been made. Payout may be automatic by means of a change-giving machine. Uncollected winning bets are transferred at the end of the day to more permanent storage 32, which may be magnetic tape, and winning cards are presented at special stations for payment on later occasions.
