<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of highly precisely detecting defective separation of a recording medium from a rotating body such as an intermediate transfer body, and reducing the trouble caused by the progress of a separation failure condition as much as possible. <P>SOLUTION: A reflection type optical sensor 26 is arranged in a non-contact state with an intermediate transfer body 7, on the downstream side of a secondary transfer part in the advancing direction of the intermediate transfer body 7.
