PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a clay composition for a porous metal or a porous ceramic, and to provide a method with the use of it for easily producing a porous material, particularly, the porous material having a specific distribution, for instance, inclination-distribution of a pore diameter and porosity and an orientation of pores. SOLUTION: A method for producing the clay composition comprises the steps of: preparing a slurry by adding a metallic powder or a ceramic powder, a pore-forming material made of at least one resin selected from among a foaming resin, a hollow resin and a solid resin with a grain size of 5 to 5,000μm, into an aqueous and viscous solution of a binder formed of a water-soluble polymer; and adding a gelation material to the resultant liquid. The water-soluble polymer to be used includes polyvinyl alcohol. The gelation material to be preferably used includes: a boron-containing compound such as borax and boric acid; congo red; and phenol.
