PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an epoxy resin which yields a cured product which is excellent in heat resistance and water resistance and has a low coefficient of linear expansion. SOLUTION: The epoxy resin is represented by formula (1) and is obtained e. g. by reacting a dihydroxynaphthalene compound with epihalohydrin in the presence of an alkaline metal hydroxide to prepare a low-molecular-weight glycidyl-etherified product, subsequently reacting the same with dihydroxynaphthalene so that it achieves a high molecular weight and glycidyl-etherifying an alcoholic hydroxy group contained in the molecule.
