<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and a method for supplying cover gas reducing installation cost and operation cost while substantially reducing installation space. <P>SOLUTION: This cover gas supply system 1 has a dimethyl ether supply means 2 for supplying dimethyl ether to a fuel-supply line 21 supplying fuel to a high temperature fuel cell power generator 20. It is preferable that the fuel-supply line has a water supply means 3 for supplying water. A method supplying the cover gas supplied to prevent oxidation of a fuel electrode after stopping supplying the fuel when the high temperature fuel cell power generator stops supplies dimethyl ether to the fuel-supply line as the cover gas at least until the temperature of the fuel electrode 26 becomes below the temperature at which the fuel electrode is oxidized with atomospheric gas.
