PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejector equipped with a desired waste liquid collecting function which becomes necessary so as to satisfy two needs of the possibility of mass printing and the portability according to the necessity, and to provide a method of collecting a waste liquid. SOLUTION: The apparatus is equipped with a liquid jet unit (10) of a portable type, and a stationary unit (100) to which the unit (10) is attached and united separably. The liquid jet unit (10) has a liquid container (14) which stores a liquid to be supplied to a liquid jet head (12), a liquid suction means which sucks the liquid from the liquid jet head (12), and a waste liquid collecting vessel (17) which collects the liquid sucked and discharged from the liquid jet head (12). The stationary unit (100) has a waste liquid collecting tank which collects the liquid discharged from the waste liquid collecting vessel (17). The apparatus further includes a waste liquid collecting tank connecting means (16) which enables the waste liquid collecting vessel (17) and the waste liquid collecting tank to communicate with each other when the liquid jet unit (10) is united with the stationary unit (100).
