PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speed up software processing associated with a cluster chain. SOLUTION: The cluster number of the cluster following a head cluster is recorded in the cluster chain information field of a directory cluster chain item. Accordingly, when a directory item or the directory item of a directory of the file in a predetermined directory is recorded over a plurality of clusters (when a cluster chain is generated) and a desired file is retrieved from within the directory, a cluster number of the cluster following a head cluster is acquired by analyzing the information recorded in the cluster chain information field of the directory cluster chain item which indicates the directory.
