A motor fuel which does not produce deposits in the fuel inlet systems of internal combustion engines comprises hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range and not more than 2 per cent by weight of a hydrocarbon lubricating oil containing an oil-soluble salt of an aromatic or cycloaliphatic carboxylic or sulphonic acid or of a phenol with a metal of Group II of the Periodic Table. According to a modification of the invention, instead of a Group II metal salt of a phenol, there is employed a Group II metal salt of a condensation product of a hydrocarbon-substituted phenol containing at least 4 carbon atoms in the substituent with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde or a polymer thereof. The hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range may comprise catalytically or thermally reformed or cracked gasolines, or mixtures thereof, straight-run gasolines, and fuels consisting of or comprising benzene or toluene. Blends of gasoline with benzene, toluene, alcohols or ethers may also be employed. The hydrocarbon lubricating oil may be a residual or distillate mineral oil, a polymerized olefin, an alkylated aromatic compound (e.g., poly-tertiary butyl naphthalene) or a mixture of such oils. Group II metals mentioned are calcium, zinc, beryllium, magnesium, strontium, cadmium and mercury, and normal or basic salts of these metals, or mixtures thereof, may be employed. The motor fuel may contain organo-metallic anti-knock agents such as tetraethyl lead, iron carbonyl and dicyclopentadienyl iron, and also scavengers for such compounds. When the motor fuel is leaded, it may contain a halo-hydrocarbon scavenger such as ethylene dibromide, ethylene dichloride, acetylene tetrabromide hexachloropropylene, the mono- or poly-halo propanes, butanes or pentanes, and mono- or poly-halo alkyl benzene. Mixtures of halohydrocarbon scavengers, such as a mixture of ethylene dichloride and ethylene dibromide, may be employed. The motor fuel may also contain additives for modifying the nature of combustion chamber deposits (e.g. organic esters of oxyacids of phosphorus) and antioxidants (e.g. 2, 4-dimethyl-6-butyl-phenol). In the examples, gasoline compositions are described containing mineral lubricating oil and zinc 3, 5-di-isopropyl salicylate or the calcium salt of mixed alkyl salicylic acids containing 14-18 carbon atoms in the alkyl groups. According to the Provisional Specification, the Group II metal salts may be added to the motor fuel in the absence of the lubricating oil.
