Phosphorus compounds are prepared by reaction of phosphonoesters with alcohols or amines. Phosphorus compounds are prepared by reaction of phosphonoesters of formula (RO) 2P(=O)-M-C(=O)-OR 1>and/or formula (RO) 2P(=O)-CH[C(=O)-OR 1>]-(Y) z-CH[C(=O)-OR 1>]-X with alcohols of formula R 2>-OH or amines of formula (R 3>) 2NH. M : divalent saturated, linear or branched 1-4C alkylene radical, preferably -CH 2-CH 2- or -CH 2-CH(CH 3)-; X : H or P(=O)(OR 2); z : 0 or 1; Y : M in which one H is optionally replaced by -P(O)(OR) 2; R : 1-4C alkyl, preferably -CH 3; R 1>-CH 3or -CH 2-CH 3; R 2>-OH : mono- or polyhydric optionally saturated 2-6C alcohol or polyvinyl alcohol; R 3>R, H or CH 2=C(R 4>)-CH 2-, where not more than one R 3>is H; and R 4>H or CH 3.
