METHOD OF MANUFACTURING TITANIUM GOLF CLUB HAVING A STRIKINGSURFACE FREE OF OXYGEN-STABILIZED ALPHA PHASE TITANIUM

A golf club body is formed by casting a molten material of titanium or alloys of titanium in a mold and allowing said molten material to solidify. Once solidified, the golf club body comprises as a face portion having a front surface and a rear surface, an alpha case and an underlying base material. Thereafter the alpha case is removed by exposing the golf club body to a conformal milling process capable of selectively removing the alpha case such that a sufficient quantity of the alpha case is removed so as to expose said underlying base material. The conformal milling process removes at least .004 inches of material from the front surface of said face portion and at least .004 inches of material from said rear surface of said face portion; and may comprise chemical milling of said golf club body in an acid bath, eg of hydrofluoric acid.
