An edge light type backlight unit and a display device adopting the same are provided to eliminate the need of a space for mixing color lights, thereby reducing the thickness of the backlight unit, by mixing the color lights within a light emitting diode package having multiple light emitting diodes. An edge light type backlight unit comprises a light guiding plate and a light source unit(60). The light guiding plate guides the light to a display panel for forming an image. The light source unit is disposed on at least one surface of the light guiding plate. The light source unit is formed by mounting a plurality of multi-chip light emitting diode packages(70) on a printed circuit board(65). Each of the multi-chip light emitting diodes packages light emitting diodes(70a,70b,70c), which emit the light having at least two wavelength regions.
