A method of recovering heat energy during blowdown of a steam boiler is described wherein thermal energy is recovered both from flash steam produced by blowdown water and the blowdown water itself. The flash steam is preferab ly condensed in the feedwater so as to recover the water volume of the flash steam in addition to its heat energy. The heat from the blowdown water is recovere d through a heat exchanger immersed in the blowdown water.
