An IPS(In-Plane Switching) mode LCD is provided to improve the brightness without reduction of aperture ratio and enhance viewing angle characteristic, by optimizing the displacement of common and pixel electrodes within a pixel region. A first substrate and a second substrate face each other. A gate line(114) and a data line(130) cross each other to define a pixel region on the first substrate. The gate line and the data line are respectively formed in a first direction and a second direction. A thin film transistor(T) is formed at a crossing of the gate line and the data line. A common electrode(116) is formed within the pixel region, and inclined in an acute angle with respect to the first direction. A common electrode connecting pattern(118) is connected to the common electrode, and formed in the second direction at an edge portion of a pixel region adjacent the data line. A pixel electrode(136) is apart from the common electrode at a predetermined distance, and alternates with the common electrode within the pixel region. A pixel electrode connecting pattern(138) is connected to the pixel electrode, and overlaps the common electrode connecting pattern. An alignment layer is rubbing-processed in the first direction above the first substrate. A liquid crystal layer is interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate, and has a phase difference of 340 to 400 nanometers. |
