A composite fiber of low fineness with light interference coloring function, capable of development into a field of merchandise requiring aesthetic properties. There is provided a novel composite fiber enabling supply of such a composite fiber, characterized by having such a structure that the periphery of a 10 mum or less thick alternate laminate composed of alkali hardly soluble polymer layers with different refractive indexes, wherein the ratio of solubility parameter value (SP1) of high-index-side polymer to solubility parameter value (SP2) of low-index-side polymer, (SP1/SP2), is in the range of 0.8 to 1.1, alternately piled upon each other in parallel to the major axis direction of planiform section is covered by a 2.0 mum or more thick alkali easily soluble polymer.
