An apparatus and a method for adjusting the brightness of a backlight in a mobile communication terminal are provided to detect a direction in which a user looks at the terminal by using a terrestrial magnetism sensor and an acceleration sensor and brightly control the backlight only in the detected direction, thereby reducing the current consumption of a battery. A terrestrial magnetism sensor(101) and an acceleration sensor(102) respectively detect a terrestrial magnetism value and an inclination value. An MSM(Mobile Station Modem)(103) recognizes the value of the terrestrial magnetism sensor(101) and the acceleration sensor(102) and detects the inclination of a terminal, and outputs a dimming control signal for controlling the back light brightness of a set part. A backlight driving unit(104) outputs a driving voltage necessary to the drive of the back light designated by the control of the MSM(103). A backlight unit(105) illuminates each part of an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) screen by the driving voltage applied in the backlight driving unit(104).
