Dyeing composition in a medium, preferably water comprises at least a dye comprising direct dyes or dye precursors and propylene glycol derivative. Dyeing composition in a medium comprises: at least one hydrophobic direct dye with an logP of greater than 2; and at least one propylene glycol derivative of formula R1(OC3H6)nOR2, where the moiety OC3H6 is optionally branched, where the medium comprises water at 40 wt.%. R1H, 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C acyl; R21-6C alkyl or 6-30C aryl; and n : 1-6. Independent claims are included for: (1) a process of applying the composition on the keratinous fibers for a sufficient time to obtain desired color, followed by rinsing; and (2) an kit for dyeing comprising the composition and a composition containing an oxidizing agent.
